New Mexico Higher Education

New Mexico’s public universities and colleges are part of a coordinated statewide higher education system focused on expanding access, opportunity, and workforce impact across the state. As members of the New Mexico Council of University Presidents (NMCUP), the state’s seven main campuses and their nine branch campuses expand access to higher education for students and communities throughout New Mexico.

From small rural communities with populations in the hundreds to metropolitan areas approaching one million residents, a branch campus may represent the only possibility to earn an invaluable certification, two-year, four-year, or advanced degree — with direct pathways to career advancement and economic mobility.

In 2022, New Mexico achieved its bold vision for a tuition-free scholarship program for all New Mexicans. Made possible through investments by the Governor, the New Mexico Legislature, and continued support for the Lottery Scholarship, the Opportunity Scholarship is now nationally recognized as one of the country’s most inclusive tuition-free higher education models.

Acclaimed for expanding access across two-year and four-year public institutions, New Mexico’s model creates new opportunities for traditional students and returning adult learners — notably without income restrictions. At a time when many states in the U.S. continue to experience declining enrollment, New Mexico has had sustained enrollment growth as more students pursue higher education, career advancement, and new workforce opportunities. Driven by sustained investments in tuition-free college, enrollment growth, and expanded career training pathways, New Mexico now ranks #20 in the nation for higher education according to U.S. News & World Report.

NMCUP member institutions educate more than 100,000 students annually, actively preparing graduates for careers that shape nearly every sector of New Mexico’s economy, workforce and communities. Across New Mexico’s expansive higher education system, students are pursuing careers and professional pathways in: nursing, allied health, social work, education, engineering, agriculture, business, public service, skilled trades, scientific research, and advanced and emerging technology fields.

New Mexico’s public colleges and universities play a major role in innovation and economic development. New Mexico is home to four nationally recognized research universities and cultivates strong connections to Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories. Faculty, researchers, and students are leading work in areas including energy, water, cybersecurity, aerospace, bioscience, quantum technologies, social sciences, and behavioral health. Throughout the state, higher education institutions are also building partnerships that drive workforce development, entrepreneurship, and regional economic growth.
